Mission Statement & Philosophy

“Be it known to all who enter that Christ is the reason for this school.”

Mission

John Paul II Catholic School is forming disciples of Christ through the teaching of the Catholic faith while providing academic excellence and preparing students to become responsible members of family, church, and community.

Philosophy of John Paul II Catholic School

We believe that each student is a unique individual created by God and destined for a life with Him. We believe that parents and guardians are the primary teacher of children and, therefore, should actively be involved in the educational progress of children. We believe that all children can learn and by guiding the development of the student, we can help each student fulfill a commitment to Jesus Christ.

Governance

John Paul II Catholic School is a school with students from all six Union County Catholic parishes: St. Ann,St. Agnes, St. Peter, St. Ambrose, Sacred Heart, and St. Francis Borgia. Each parish has representation on the school council as well as one non-Catholic member. The school observes the Laws of the Roman Catholic Church, state laws pertaining to non-public schools, and the rules and regulations of the Diocese of Owensboro Catholic Schools Office. These rules and regulations can be found in the Diocesan Handbook for Catholic Schools and are approved by the Diocesan Committee for Total Catholic Education.

Admissions

The Diocese of Owensboro and John Paul II Catholic School will admit students of any race, sex, religion, nationality or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs and activities. (Diocesan #400)  JP II will not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, nationality or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarships, loans, athletic programs or any other school-administered program.  The parent or legal guardian must register all students and provide the necessary forms.

All new students enrolled at JP II will be on probation in order to determine if the school can meet the student’s educational needs.  Reasonable accommodations will be made to assist each student to ensure academic success, but finances may prevent JPII from providing special services that some students may require.  Many public school special programs are required by law and funded only in public schools.  If for any reason JPII cannot provide the needed instruction or if the student does not adhere to school policies, the principal, in consultation with the Episcopal Vicar, will notify the parent or guardian that the student must immediately withdraw.  Any student enrolling at JPII who is transferring from a non-accredited school or a homeschool may be required to take tests to determine where the student should be placed or to determine class credit. This testing is done by a JPII teacher(s) in the current grade of the incoming student.

Children reaching the age of five on or before August 1st of the current school year shall be eligible to enroll in kindergarten.  Any student, who is six on or before August 1st must be enrolled in school according to KY law.  Kentucky School Law requires successful completion of kindergarten before entering first grade.  (Diocese # 401)   Proof of attendance and a report card/progress report from a certified kindergarten is necessary when enrolling a student in first grade.
